Full Biography
Bitna Lee is a concert pianist of international distinction, acclaimed for her profound touch and distinctive artistry. Her exceptional gift was recognized early when, as a seventh grader in Korea, she was discovered by the world-renowned pianist Ik-choo Moon — then Chair of the Department of Music at UCLA — which led to her move to the United States.
After winning and placing in numerous prestigious competitions, including the International Bach Competition, she made a brilliant American debut at the age of 14, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 with the Angeles Orchestra at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre — broadcast live on Los Angeles radio, drawing wide attention from the American musical community.
Returning to South Korea, she pursued her Bachelor of Music at the Korea National University of Arts (KNUA), studying under Choong-mo Kang and Kyung-sook Lee — two of the most distinguished figures in the Korean piano tradition. She subsequently moved to Vienna, Austria, to pursue the Pianoforte Concert Major at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW), where she studied under Alexander Jenner, former Jury President of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, and Stefan Vladar — one of the foremost Beethoven interpreters of our time. As Vladar's first student, Lee immersed herself in the Viennese classical tradition, developing a particularly deep understanding of Beethoven's musical language under his direct guidance. Stefan Vladar — internationally celebrated as both a pianist and conductor — continues to enjoy a prolific career on the world's foremost stages. As the most profound artistic influence on Bitna Lee's musical identity, his mastery of the Viennese classical tradition, above all in Beethoven, left an indelible mark on her interpretive voice and artistic sensibility.
During her studies at the MDW, she received a special invitation to perform the opening concert of the Vienna International Competition at the legendary Bösendorfer Hall in Vienna, Austria — becoming the first Korean artist ever to do so — a milestone that marked her historic Vienna, Austria debut. Lee received sustained private instruction from pianist Won-mi Kim — a distinguished Liszt specialist based in Italy — through whom she acquired the brilliant technique and deeply considered interpretive approach that define Liszt's demanding repertoire. Won-mi Kim remains one of the most formative artistic influences in Lee's musical development. In Seoul, she performed numerous concerts alongside celebrated artists, cementing her reputation on the Korean concert stage as well.
She is now based in the Washington D.C. area, where she maintains an active career as a concert artist, competition juror, and dedicated educator.

중학교 1학년 시절, 당시 UCLA 음악과장이었던 세계적인 피아니스트 문익주에게 발탁되어 도미하며 본격적인 음악적 천재성을 드러냈다. 일찍이 International Bach Competition을 비롯한 세계 유수의 콩쿠르에서 상위 입상한 그는, 만 14세의 나이에 Angeles Orchestra와 모차르트 피아노 협주곡 20번(Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20)을 Wilshire Ebell Theatre에서 협연하며 화려한 미국 무대 데뷔를 이뤄냈다. 이 성공적인 데뷔 연주는 LA 현지 라디오 방송을 통해 생중계되며 미국 음악계의 큰 주목을 받았다.
귀국 후 한국예술종합학교 음악원 예술사 과정에 진학하여 한국 피아노계의 거목인 강충모, 이경숙 교수를 사사하며 음악적 기반을 더욱 공고히 다졌으며, 이후 국제 무대로의 본격적인 도약을 위해 빈 국립음악대학교 (Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, Vienna, Austria) 최고연주자과정(Pianoforte Concert Major)으로 유학길에 올랐다. 빈 유학 시절에는 차이코프스키 국제 콩쿠르 심사위원장을 역임한 알렉산더 제너(Alexander Jenner)와 베토벤의 거장이자 세계적인 피아니스트 겸 지휘자인 슈테판 블라더(Stefan Vladar)를 사사하며 정통 유럽 클래식의 정수를 전수받았다. 슈테판 블라더의 첫 번째 제자로서, 그의 직접적인 지도 아래 베토벤 음악에 대한 깊은 이해와 해석의 안목을 키웠다. 슈테판 블라더(Stefan Vladar)는 피아니스트이자 지휘자로서 현재도 세계 주요 무대에서 왕성한 활동을 이어가고 있는 거장이다. 이빛나의 음악적 정체성과 예술적 감수성에 가장 깊은 영향을 준 스승으로서, 그의 빈 고전 전통에 대한 탁월한 해석 — 특히 베토벤에 대한 깊은 통찰 — 은 이빛나의 연주 세계에 깊이 새겨진 음악적 유산이자, 그녀의 연주 철학과 예술적 방향성을 근원에서 빚어낸 원천이 되었다.
특히 빈 국립음대 재학 시절, 'Vienna International Competition'의 초청을 받아 오스트리아 빈(Vienna, Austria)의 전설적인 뵈젠도르퍼 홀(Bösendorfer Hall)에서 한국인 최초로 오프닝 콘서트를 장식하며 역사적인 빈 데뷔 독주회를 가졌다. 이탈리아에서 활동하는 리스트 전문 피아니스트 김원미와 지속적인 개인 레슨을 통해 리스트 특유의 화려한 테크닉과 깊이 있는 해석을 전수받았으며, 김원미는 피아니스트 이빛나의 음악적 성장에 가장 큰 영향을 준 여성 피아니스트 중 한 명이다. 이를 시작으로 한·오스트리아 대사관 주최 초청 연주, 마약 퇴치 기금 마련 초청 연주를 비롯해 스위스, 이탈리아 볼로냐 등 유럽 전역에서 활발한 연주 행보를 이어갔다.
서울에서는 다양한 연주자들과 함께 다수의 콘서트를 개최하며 한국 무대에서도 확고한 입지를 다졌다. 귀국 후에는 국내외를 오가는 활발한 연주 활동과 더불어 후학 양성에도 힘써, 예원학교, 서울예고, 주요 음악대학 등 명문 교육기관의 합격생을 대거 배출하며 탁월한 교수법을 인정받았다. 이후 다시 미국으로 무대를 옮겨 현재 워싱턴 D.C. 인근을 거점으로 심도 있는 레슨 및 마스터클래스, 콩쿠르 심사위원 위촉, 그리고 지속적인 연주 활동을 통해 중견 피아니스트이자 교육자로서의 독보적인 영역을 구축해 나가고 있다.
